If you spent time with Zagreus in the original Hades, you already know the rhythm: fast runs, tight combat, and a story that unfolds across dozens of deaths. Hades II shifts the spotlight to Melinoë, the Princess of the Underworld, training in dark sorcery against the Titan of Time. It is an action-RPG roguelike that builds on its predecessor's foundations without abandoning what made it feel so responsive.

On Apple Silicon, the game runs as a native build. I loaded version 1.143476 on a Mac mini M4 under macOS Tahoe and the frame pacing was immediately comfortable — no Rosetta layer, no translation overhead. You are getting the full Metal-backed render path here.

Controls work with keyboard and mouse or a controller right away. Launchpad picks up the app after you drag it to Applications, and the interface switches cleanly between the sixteen supported languages, including Russian, Japanese, and Greek. Voice lines stay in English regardless of your text language choice, which is worth knowing if you like matching VO to subtitles.

What small shortcuts are easy to miss?

The pause menu lists basic controls, but a few shortcuts are buried deeper. Holding Shift while viewing any boon or upgrade shows its exact numerical values instead of the default descriptive text — damage percentages, cooldown reductions, and status effect durations become visible. It is the single most useful key you are not pressing.

During dialogue, tapping Escape skips to the next line without cutting off the voice line, which is gentler than the full skip command. In the Training Grounds, you can reset your entire loadout with one button press instead of clearing each slot individually; look for the prompt in the lower-left corner. The Codex also remembers your last-opened entry when you press its hotkey, so you can check a boon list mid-run without scrolling from the top every time.

Tighten auto-aim and dial screen shake to 30%

Two options make an immediate difference. Auto-aim assist defaults to partial; switching it to full tightens the lock-on window for ranged attacks, which helps with Melinoë's staff casts when enemies cluster. Under Accessibility, reducing screen shake to around 30% keeps the impact feel intact while making enemy tells easier to read during longer runs.

If you play on a MacBook with a smaller display, bump the UI scale up one notch. The default size is legible on an external monitor but can shrink boon icons and health bars on a 13- or 14-inch screen. The Run toggle setting — hold versus press — is also worth testing early; the hold default works for quick directional changes, but a toggle frees up a finger during the longer backtracking stretches between encounters.

Earlier dialogue branches from the Titan of Time arc

Version 1.143476 broadens the mythic world considerably. The story now pulls directly from the Titan of Time arc, which means more dialogue branches unlock earlier than they did in the May 2024 early access launch. Runs feel less like isolated attempts and more like chapters in a longer narrative, with Olympus reacting to your progress in ways the original Hades reserved for much later loops.

Dark sorcery adds a second resource layer beyond standard boons. Melinoë's hexes — charged by dealing damage — sit on a separate cooldown from your cast, so you are juggling one more decision per encounter. The Olympian gift pool also widened: over a dozen gods now contribute boons, and duplicate combinations from different deities interact more explicitly, with status effects like Freeze and Scorch chaining in ways that reward build experimentation rather than raw damage stacking.

Enemy variety increased in the mid-biome areas, which changes the rhythm of the third and fourth chambers. You face more shielded phantoms and fewer straightforward melee mobs, so positioning matters more than it did in earlier builds. It is still early access, but the loop already feels denser than the original's post-launch state.
