Players who enjoy bending one set of rules to create another will find their home here. The minute-to-minute loop in CATO is a constant negotiation between two characters that operate nothing alike.

  1. You enter a room. A cat stands on one side, a slice of toast on the other. Both can move, but only one is active at a time.
  2. The cat does cat things: it runs, jumps off walls, and clings to ledges. You use it to reach switches, move through tight gaps, and scout ahead.
  3. You swap to the toast. The toast slides along flat surfaces, rides air currents, and floats on water. It cannot jump, but it can reach places the cat sinks straight through.
  4. A puzzle emerges. A door needs a switch pressed, but the switch is underwater. The cat hits another switch that drains the room, then the toast glides to the goal. Or a boss fight starts—a large mechanical enemy that forces you to swap rapidly to dodge patterns and hit weak points.
  5. You solve the room. Sometimes the real exit is hidden behind a breakable wall or a false ceiling, leading to a side level with a tougher variation of the idea.

September 2024 under-the-hood clean-up

Version 1.3.922 landed in September 2024 and brought mostly under-the-hood clean-up. The game was already stable on Apple Silicon, but players on older Intel Macs noticed fewer frame drops during the multi-phase boss fights. Collision detection on moving platforms got a quiet fix too—there was a rare bug where the toast would clip through a conveyor belt if you swapped characters mid-slide. That edge case is gone now.

The more visible change came a few patches earlier: the side-level unlock flow was reworked so hidden rooms register immediately on the world map instead of requiring a restart. For completionists chasing all 60-plus side rooms, this means less backtracking to check whether a secret actually counted.

A speedrunner's first five minutes

Imagine someone who resets a level the moment they lose a half-second. They open world three, spot a room with two pressure plates, a lava pool, and a ceiling too high for the cat to wall-jump from the starting ledge. The obvious route is to send the cat left, hit the plate that lowers a bridge, swap to toast, ride the bridge across, and press the second plate together. That takes about eight seconds.

They try something sharper. Cat leaps onto the wall, kicks off at pixel height, and lands directly on the far plate. No bridge needed. Then they swap to toast while the cat is still airborne so the toast spawns already on the lowered platform, saves two seconds, and skips the lava hazard entirely. That kind of double-input planning—where you swap not just for utility but for spawn positioning—is what the optional rooms reward over and over. A cato buttered cat mac torrent search might lead you here, but the real draw is finding optimizations the level designer left in on purpose.

Disable screen shake to catch telegraph glows

Three adjustments make the game feel more responsive right away:

  • Disable screen shake. It is on by default and adds weight to boss impacts, but during tight platform swaps it can mask visual cues—especially the subtle glow that telegraphs where toast will spawn when you switch.
  • Set swap input to a single key. The default uses a two-button chord. Binding a dedicated key—Q or a mouse side button—cuts swap time by roughly a frame and makes rapid-fire boss patterns easier to read.
  • Turn off auto-camera recentering. In rooms with vertical scrolling, the camera drifts back to the midpoint whenever you stop moving. For levels with precise wall jumps near the ceiling, manual camera control keeps your reference point fixed.

None of these change the puzzles, but they remove a layer of friction between the idea you have and the inputs your fingers send.

Over 60 optional rooms build on this logic, and the boss encounters punctuate the main path with tests of speed rather than pure planning.
