If you've ever set a queue of tasks in a colony sim like RimWorld, the dwarf management here will feel like a natural, albeit more fantastical, evolution. You aren't laying out power grids, but you are giving direct orders to a small tribe of dwarves to dig, build, and survive in a 2D side-scrolling world. The core loop revolves around collected resources you use to craft items, structures, weapons, and armor, slowly fortifying your position against the nightly onslaught of monsters.

What content is in the box

The entire experience is procedurally generated, so no two worlds are the same. You're dropped into a fresh, random landscape each time, which pushes you to adapt your mining and crafting strategy on the fly. Beyond the pickaxes and walls, you get a set of spells that let you speed up your dwarves, light up dark caves, or summon weather effects to turn the tide. The game ships with interface language support for Russian, English, German, Spanish, Italian, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Polish, French, and Japanese.

Does it run natively on Apple silicon yet?

The developers list it as a 64-bit Intel build, running nicely on a modern system like macOS Tahoe on a Mac mini 2024 M4 under Rosetta 2. There isn't a native Apple silicon slice in the app bundle, but the architecture holds up fine for a game originally released on 24 November 2014.

Why dwarfs get stuck on ladders less often now

The jump from the older 1.9 era to 1.11.012 brought a handful of fixes that smooth out a few rough edges during long sessions. Dwarf pathfinding got a small logic tweak — they're slightly less prone to freezing on ladders when a block gets removed mid-climb. Terrain generation now places underground lakes more consistently, which makes the early game a touch less random when you're hunting for a water source. The crafting queue also remembers its scroll position after you return from the world view, so you aren't constantly dragging the list back to where you were. None of it rewrites the game, but if you've ever lost a dwarf to a stuck animation while a wave of giant spiders closed in, the pathfinding polish alone makes the update worth applying.

Light physics and direct dwarf control versus a plumbing simulator

Set it beside Oxygen Not Included and you'll see the difference immediately: Klei's colony sim is a thermodynamics and plumbing simulator disguised as a cartoon base builder, whereas Craft the World keeps the physics light and leans harder into direct dwarf micro-management and tower-defense nights. Compared to Dwarf Fortress, the interface here is a sketchbook to the latter's spreadsheet — no Z-level nightmares, just a flat 2D cross-section of a world you can actually parse at a glance. Terraria shares the side-on digging and crafting DNA, but removes the god-game layer and the autonomous dwarves; you're one character with a pickaxe, not a disembodied overseer juggling a tribe. Craft the World sits in a comfortable middle ground: more structured than a pure sandbox, more approachable than a hardcore simulation, and with a clear defensive rhythm that gives each day a purpose.

Dig a two-wide chimney to stop skeletons pouring in

On your first boot, the tutorial covers the basics, but here's what I'd add. Dig a two-wide chimney straight up from your shelter on day one — skeletons can't climb down through a narrow vertical shaft, but they'll pour through a single ladder left open to the surface. Place a totem before sunset; the radius matters more than the material, and skipping it turns the first night into a frantic melee. Set your craft table to queue five wooden clubs and five wooden armor pieces immediately — the starting gear isn't enough for when the portal opens its second wave. Use the spell that lights dark caves before sending dwarves into a deep mine; it costs little mana and prevents the mood penalty from darkness that slows work speed. If you grab a Craft The World Mac torrent, you'll get the same build distributed DRM-free — just mount the .dmg, drag the app into /Applications, and launch it from Launchpad. The game stores worlds in ~/Library/Application Support/CraftTheWorld, so backing up a fortress you're attached to is a matter of copying that folder.

$ man craft-the-world | grep -A2 "?"

Does the game world stay the same after you restart?

No, the worlds are randomly generated, so restarting creates a completely new landscape to explore and mine.
