Darkest Dungeon for macOS
If you've spent time with tactical RPGs like XCOM where a soldier's panic can unravel a mission, Darkest Dungeon twists that tension in a different direction. Here, the psychological strain is the point. Your adventurers aren't just managing health and positioning—they're accumulating stress, developing phobias, and sometimes saying things that rattle the rest of the party. A turn-based combat system that looks straightforward on the surface gets complicated fast when a character becomes abusive or paranoid mid-fight.
The threats go beyond what's swinging a blade at you. Hunger wears down the party between battles. The torch burns lower, and with the darkness comes worse odds and more terror. Disease can cling to a hero long after a dungeon run ends, forcing hard choices about who to send back into the Hamlet's crumbling halls. This is a roguelike where you're managing a roster of deeply flawed people, not just a party of four.
The current build (27889) is 64-bit Intel and runs on macOS 10.12 or later with 2 GB of RAM and OpenGL 3.2+ graphics. Interface support covers Russian, English, German, Spanish, Italian, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, French, Czech, and Japanese.
Performance gains you feel after an hour-long delve
Version 27889 is a quiet one in terms of feature announcements — the official note is simply performance improvements for Mac and PC. In practice, that translates to what you notice when the game has been running for an hour and the roster screen starts filling up with afflicted heroes. Older builds could stutter during torch-light transitions in the Warrens or when the Collector spawned with a full set of heads. The current build smooths out some of that overhead, particularly on Intel Macs that sit near the minimum OpenGL 3.2 requirement.
It's not a content patch. The hero classes, the Hamlet upgrades, the Crimson Court and Color of Madness content areas — none of that changed. What improved is how the engine handles the busiest moments: multiple status effect icons updating at once, the narrator's bark firing while a critical lands, the save file autosaving between rooms. On a Mac mini 2024 M4 running through Rosetta, those hitches are largely gone.
How the game fits with other Mac apps
Darkest Dungeon doesn't need a companion app to work, but it plays well with a few macOS habits. It's a natural fit for Mission Control: leave it running in fullscreen on one Space while a wiki or a character sheet sits in another. The game pauses cleanly when you swipe away, and the music — Wayne June's narration included — fades back in without a hiccup.
If you keep notes in something like Notes or a plain text file, the game doesn't mind. There's no lock on window focus, so you can tab out to jot down which hero is carrying the Ancestor's Bottle or which quirk you want to lock in at the Sanitarium. The autosave covers you if you close the lid mid-dungeon; progress resumes at the last room transition, and the game was designed around that kind of interruption.
One detail worth knowing: the game saves to its own data folder, not to iCloud. If you move between two Macs, your estate doesn't follow you automatically. Copying the save folder is a manual process, but it's straightforward once you locate the directory in ~/Library/Application Support/.
Disable screen shake to ease those opening hours
The game's default settings are playable, but a few tweaks make the opening hours less punishing and the interface less noisy.
- Turn off screen shake. The camera jolts on every critical hit and trap trigger. It sells the impact for the first hour, then becomes visual noise. You'll lose nothing by disabling it.
- Enable faster walking and combat speeds. The default pace is deliberate — fitting for the atmosphere, but slow when you're running your fifth trip into the Ruins. The speed toggles for movement and combat are separate, so you can keep combat at normal and speed up corridor walking.
- Turn on the torch reminder. The game warns you when the light drops below 75, but only if you enable the option. It's a simple tooltip-style alert that prevents a lot of accidental ambushes in the dark.
- Check the colorblind mode. If the stress bar and the health bar ever blur together, the alternate palette makes statuses and enemy marks easier to separate at a glance.
It runs on M-series Macs through Rosetta 2
Does it run on an M-series Mac? Yes, but through Rosetta 2. The build is Intel-only, and the game runs well enough that most players won't care. You don't need to install anything extra — macOS handles the translation automatically on first launch. On a Mac mini 2024 M4, the game runs without the kind of slowdown that would affect turn-based combat, which is exactly the genre that benefits most from Rosetta compatibility.
Is it the full game or a cut-down Mac port? The full game. The Hamlet, all hero classes, the Darkest Dungeon endgame, and the DLC areas if they're part of the build you have are all present. The interface languages match the PC release: Russian, English, German, Spanish, Italian, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, French, Czech, and Japanese. The narrator's voice stays English regardless of the interface language, because Wayne June's performance is the anchor of the atmosphere.
How hard is it really? Hard enough that losing a hero in the first hour is normal. The game expects you to make bad choices about who to send where, and it punishes optimism. But the difficulty isn't mechanical in the way a bullet-hell is mechanical. It's about resource pressure: how many torches you bring, how much food you can afford, whether you retreat early or push one more room. The rogue element means runs are short, and each one teaches something concrete about team composition.
Does it need an internet connection? No. After the initial install, the game plays fully offline. Autosaves are local, and there's no account system to sign into.
How long does a single dungeon run take? A short expedition is around ten to fifteen minutes once you know the controls. Longer missions stretch to thirty or forty. The game's structure is built around this rhythm — a run, a town management pass, a decision about who goes next, then another run.

What threats do I manage beyond combat?
You balance stress, hunger, disease, and the ever-dropping light level. Each one can break a hero's mind or body independently of enemy damage.
