Darkest Dungeon II is a roguelike road trip where a party of four heroes travels by stagecoach through a decaying world, fighting turn-based battles and managing the group's crumbling morale. The current build, 2.04 (85095), runs natively on Apple silicon and Intel Macs since the Darkside of the Mountain update.

The main structure splits into two modes. Confessions is the original run-based campaign, while Kingdoms is a stand-alone strategic campaign played independently. Both pull from the same roster and combat system, but Kingdoms changes how you think about territory and commitment. During travel, heroes can build relationships, and those relationships — along with stress — decide whether an expedition continues successfully. The mark system adds another layer, affecting decision-making in battle.

A failed run is not a clean wipe. Resources carry over to the next journey, so each expedition leaves the next party slightly better equipped. The interface ships in English, Russian, German, Spanish, Italian, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Ukrainian, French, Czech, and Japanese. Stuart Chatwood composed the soundtrack.

Steam lists macOS 10.13.6 or later, 4 GB RAM, 5 GB of storage, and Intel HD 5000 graphics with Metal support as the baseline. That covers a wide range of older Macs, though the native build is what keeps newer Apple silicon machines from translating x86 instructions.

Why does the stagecoach wheel freeze on launch?

A handful of issues show up often enough to be worth documenting. The first is a freeze during the initial loading screen — the stagecoach wheel spins and nothing else happens. The fix is straightforward: force-quit the app, then right-click the game in Finder, choose Get Info, and tick Open using Rosetta. Launch it once under Rosetta, and subsequent native launches on Apple silicon usually work fine afterward. This seems tied to first-run shader compilation on Metal-capable GPUs.

Another recurring headache involves saves not syncing or appearing after a reinstall. Darkest Dungeon II stores profile data in ~/Library/Application Support/RedHook/Darkest Dungeon II/. If you wipe the app without clearing this folder, stale files can confuse a fresh install. Deleting everything inside that directory (or backing it up first if you care about your Altar of Hope progress) forces a clean slate.

Audio dropouts mid-expedition — especially in the Sprawl — are usually tied to the sample rate mismatch between the game and your audio output device. Check Audio MIDI Setup and make sure your output is set to 48 kHz; the game's audio engine expects that rate, and macOS sometimes auto-switches to 44.1 kHz on external interfaces.

Workflow: a plague doctor run through the Foetor

Here is a concrete task walkthrough: taking a fresh party into the Foetor with the Plague Doctor as your primary damage dealer, aiming to reach the inn with all four heroes alive and the stagecoach armor intact.

Start at the Crossroads. Compose the party with Plague Doctor in rank four, a Man-at-Arms in rank one, Highwayman in rank two, and Occultist in rank three. The Plague Doctor's blight skills — Noxious Blast and Plague Grenade — bypass the high physical resistance many Foetor enemies carry. The Occultist handles backline pulls and sets up combo tokens for the Highwayman's Point Blank Shot.

On the road, prioritize assistance encounters over resistance nodes. You want relationship-building triggers early. If the Plague Doctor and Highwayman hit a positive relationship, the stress heal from friendly banter during combat saves you an inventory slot you would otherwise burn on laudanum. Check the stagecoach inventory before each region exit — you need at least two stacks of medical gear and one stack of food to survive the inn check without penalties.

In combat, open with the Occultist's Daemon's Pull on any backline drummer or bile spewer. The Plague Doctor follows with Plague Grenade on both back ranks. The Man-at-Arms uses Defender on whoever carries the lowest health percentage — usually the Occultist — while the Highwayman cleans up whatever survived the blight ticks. If stress hits four pips on anyone before the inn, burn a laudanum immediately; letting it tick up during travel conversations spirals into meltdowns that torch relationships.

Does fullscreen mode dodge the MacBook notch?

The game plays well with macOS display features once you know a couple of quirks. On a MacBook with a notch, fullscreen mode respects the standard safe area — Red Hook built the UI to avoid the camera cutout, so the torch meter and character stress pips stay visible without workarounds. If you stream or record via OBS, grab the window in Window Capture mode rather than display capture; the game's Metal renderer presents directly to the window surface, and display capture sometimes drops frames during region transitions.

For players who track run statistics, Darkest Dungeon II writes a plaintext log to ~/Library/Logs/RedHook/Darkest Dungeon II/. You can pipe this into a spreadsheet or a data-wrangling tool like R or Python's pandas between sessions. The log includes hero deaths, relationship triggers, and region seed info — useful if you want to map which biome configurations correlate with party wipe rates.

The soundtrack files sit in the app bundle under Contents/Resources/Data/StreamingAssets/Audio/GeneratedSoundBanks/Mac/ as WEM files, which means they are not directly playable in the Music app. If you want the soundtrack outside the game, Stuart Chatwood's score is available as a separate download from the composer's page, but the in-game audio engine handles spatialization and dynamic layering that a flat stereo export cannot replicate — combat music swells based on stress thresholds, and you lose that context in a playlist.

Does Darkest Dungeon II run natively on Apple silicon?

Yes, native macOS support arrived in the Darkside of the Mountain update, so Apple silicon Macs run the game without Rosetta translation.

Is Kingdoms part of the main Confessions campaign?

No, Kingdoms is a stand-alone strategic campaign mode played independently of the standard Confessions mode.
