The plugin is 64-bit and native on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs running macOS 10.15 or later. Its amps, effects, and the Overlord monosynth are original designs built for modern tones that push past standard guitar sounds.

Blend a saturated rhythm tone

The amp section gives you the gain staging to move from edge-of-breakup to full distortion while keeping note definition intact. Drive the mids to sit in a dense mix without carving out the body of the guitar.

Trigger a monosynth line

The Overlord monosynth lets you fire up to two oscillators simultaneously from your guitar input. Tracking feels immediate, so the synth reacts to bends and slides the way a pedal would, not like a keyboard simulation.

Widen the stereo field with effects

Post-amp effects spread the signal without smearing the attack. Small adjustments to delay time and modulation depth pull a mono amp track out into a wide image that still anchors the center.

The Overlord synth registers MIDI input from any DAW track, which means you can sketch a bassline on a keyboard and layer guitar through the same amp model without leaving the plugin window. On macOS, the AU version talks to Logic Pro's Smart Controls: right-click any knob, assign a controller, and the mapped parameter moves with fader automation or a MIDI foot controller. The standalone app grabs the first available audio interface listed under Audio MIDI Setup, so switching between a Focusrite at the desk and the MacBook's onboard mic for a quick idea requires a manual reselect in the plugin menu—something beginners miss when they open the app and get silence.

One focused amp instead of a warehouse of gear

Compared to Amplitube 5, Archetype Rabea X keeps the signal chain focused: you get one amp model, not a warehouse of gear. Where Amplitube rewards hours of browsing through cabinet impulse responses, the Neural DSP plugin pushes you toward dialing in a sound fast with fewer moving parts. The trade-off is flexibility—if you want to swap a British EL34 power section for an American 6L6, you are out of luck here.

Against STL Tones AmpHub, the monosynth is the dividing line. AmpHub models specific amplifiers month by month, and its effects rack is deeper on modulation options, but it has nothing like Overlord. A guitarist looking to replace a dedicated synth pedal will find Archetype Rabea X more self-contained. The X update brings the UI in line with other Archetype releases, so dragging the graphical microphone on the cabinet section feels snappier than in the older Quad Cortex-linked interface—less lag when you reposition it during playback.

Multi-monitor window scaling now snaps to the correct size

The 1.0.1 release tightened a handful of behaviors that tended to trip up users on multi-monitor Mac setups. Before the patch, opening the plugin on a second display occasionally drew the window at the wrong scale factor; now it snaps to the correct Retina resolution without a manual resize. The Overlord oscillator tuning drifted by a few cents when switching sample rates mid-session—fixed, so a 48 kHz project opened in a 44.1 kHz session stays in tune. The installer also stopped placing a duplicate .component file in the user Library when the system-level AU was already present, which had caused Logic Pro to list two identical entries during validation.

Overlord synth garbles chords unless you mute the guitar input

A common mistake is treating Overlord like a polyphonic keyboard synth. It tracks one note at a time, so strumming a chord produces garbled pitch jumps. The workaround is to mute the guitar input feeding the synth block and drive it via a clean MIDI region instead—monophonic lines only, no double-stops.

Another early error: neglecting the input gain staging. The plugin expects an instrument-level signal, and plugging in a line-level source from a preamp output pushes the amp model into fizzy saturation even at low gain settings. Set your interface to instrument-level and watch the input meter in the top left of the plugin window; it should peak around -12 dBFS for the amp model to behave as designed. Finally, users who install the plugin and hunt for a standalone preset browser sometimes overlook that presets live inside the plugin's own menu, not in a separate .neuraldsp folder—dragging a preset file onto the interface loads it, but copying it into the wrong directory does nothing.

Can Archetype Rabea X run on Quad Cortex?

Yes, the plugin is compatible with both Quad Cortex and Quad Cortex mini hardware.

How many oscillators does the Overlord monosynth use?

According to the manual, Overlord can trigger up to two oscillators simultaneously from the guitar signal.
