soothe2 is a dynamic resonance suppressor that identifies and pulls down harsh, ringing frequencies as soon as they appear, without touching the rest of the signal.

Clean up a muddy low end

Switch into a split or mid/side processing mode and tell soothe2 to listen only to the center or the sides. That lets you dig rumble and mud out of a stereo reverb return or a boomy vocal without thinning the whole mix.

Soften a sibilant vocal take

Keep the depth knob conservative and the selectivity high — the soft-mode behavior pushes the detector toward the most obvious offenders first. The result is a vocal that sits back into the track without losing presence or turning dull.

Rescue a brittle synth or overhead

For piercing hi-hats or a glassy lead that hurts at high volumes, engage hard mode and let the delta meter show exactly what’s being removed. It works in narrow bands, so the transient snap stays intact while the ice gets carved away.

First days with soothe2: where to start

Open an instance on a vocal bus, keep the default preset, and watch the delta meter for a full verse. That alone teaches you how the detector behaves — you’ll see it grab sibilance, nasal peaks around 2–3 kHz, and boxiness near 400 Hz without ever touching a band selector. Once you know what it hears, you can shape the response.

A few things worth trying early:

  • Drag the depth slider up slowly while looping the harshest phrase. Stop when the discomfort disappears, not when the meter looks busy.
  • Temporarily set the quality to eco when stacking five or six instances across a mix session — the CPU difference is real, and the algorithm still catches the worst peaks.
  • Add soothe2 after a compressor on the drum bus and set the side-chain filter to zero in on 500 Hz and below. It tightens kick resonances without softening the transient.
  • Use the mid/side button on a master-bus instance to narrow processing to the center channel only. That keeps stereo width intact while cleaning up vocal and snare resonances that sit dead-center.

Is it more like Gullfoss or a traditional dynamic EQ?

The closest comparison is Gullfoss, which also listens to the signal and applies dynamic EQ curves in real time. Gullfoss leans more toward broad-stroke spectral balancing — it’s brilliant for opening up a dull mix or taming a harsh master — but it doesn’t give you the per-band surgical control that soothe2’s selectivity and delta monitoring provide. Many engineers end up using both: Gullfoss for overall tilt, soothe2 for the specific ring at 3.2 kHz that a single snare hit excites.

DSEQ3 operates on a similar principle — spectral dynamic suppression — and offers a deep feature set with a steeper learning curve. Side-by-side, DSEQ3 gives you more visual feedback and finer threshold shaping per frequency region, whereas soothe2 gets you to a musical result faster with fewer decisions. If you spend your day editing dialogue and need maximum transparency on a dozen tracks at once, DSEQ3 rewards the setup time. If you’re mixing a song and need the harshness gone before the client walks back in, soothe2 is the quicker path.

Compared to Soothe Live (the low-latency sibling now folded into soothe3), a single soothe2 instance still handles the bulk of studio work where round-trip latency doesn’t matter. Its processing resolution in high quality mode resolves finer resonances than the live variant can, which matters on vocals and acoustic instruments with dense harmonic content.

Will it glitch on an Apple Silicon Mac in Logic?

Does it work on Apple Silicon Macs? Yes — the .pkg carries a universal binary, so it runs natively on both ARM and Intel 64-bit machines. The 1.3.3 build specifically addressed a Logic playback glitch that could spike the CPU when the plug-in window first opened, so recent macOS versions play nicely with it.

Will it kill the life in a track? That depends entirely on the depth knob and your listening habits. At moderate settings with the mix control pulled back to 60–70%, it removes the sting while leaving the bite. The delta button is the best safeguard — if what you’re hearing soloed sounds like essential character rather than irritation, back off a few percent.

Is it only for vocals? Not at all. Bass guitars with a single resonant fret note, room mics that ring at one wall mode, reverb returns that build up sibilant wash — soothe2 works anywhere a narrow frequency overstays its welcome. The algorithm doesn’t care whether the source is a voice, a kick drum, or a field recording of a train brake.

Does soothe2 run natively on Apple Silicon Macs?

Yes. The current build is a universal binary with both ARM and x86 64-bit slices, so it loads natively on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs running macOS 10.14 or later.

Why would I reach for soothe2 instead of a standard EQ?

A static EQ cut lowers a frequency even when it isn't a problem. soothe2 tracks the input and only attenuates when resonance actually builds up, so quiet passages keep their full tonal balance.
